Swedish lady-duo Icona Pop -- otherwise known as Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo -- is basically the newer (better) TATU without all the making out. You might know their song Manners, but it's this track, Top Rated, that's on constant replay in my head. The lyrics "Always been top rated/ You think you can change it" makes me want to send all my ex-boyfriends a link as a big ol' musical eff you.

In all truth, I can't claim that I'm much of a Star Wars fan. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike this string of immeasurably popular movies, it's just that science fiction (and for that matter, fantasy, too) has never been one of my favourite genres. I suppose I'm too much of a stark realist whose mind is trapped in the "here and now" to lose myself in the imaginary world of a distant, technology advanced world many centuries (or millennia, as the case maybe) in the future.
I remember clearly the first and only time I saw the (original) Star Wars trilogy. It was the last week of grade five, and having completed all our tests and final projects, my teacher (Mr. Andrews) brought in all three Star Wars films (on VHS, this being in the days before DVDs were invented) to entertain my class with as we all trudged through the final days before another glorious summer vacation would commence.
I didn't go gaga for them the way most of the boys did, but I do remember wondering if Princess Leia's (now iconic) hairstyle was real or a wig 
Nevertheless, jump ahead a couple of decades to this week when my husband (who, bless his heart, is always on the lookout for vintage themed stories and images for me) brought eight incredible Star Wars posters to my attention.
{"Cruise the Galaxy Aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer", promotes this marvellously cool, old school styled Star Wars poster from talented artist Steve Thomas, whose entire eight piece series of vintage Star Wars posters can be seen here}.
Instead of being jam packed with groovy (errr, I mean sleek and enthralling) 1970s Star Wars style art, what makes this terrific posters so unique is that the artist behind them, Steven Thomas, modeled his illustrations after the classic travel poster/ad style of design the mid-twentieth century.
Looking much more 1930s era art deco than at though they could have been plucked from a galaxy far, far away, these delightful Star Wars posters are teaming with engaging vintage inspired charm that definitely appeals to me - and I'm sure many other Star Wars fans and non-fans alike!

It's scarcely a secret (see: this whole blog! :D) that I adore vintage photos - especially those of everyday people. I'm smitten, wildly captivated and downright enthralled with seeing the lives of those who came before me. Throughout my whole life this has been the case, and as I've gotten older my passion for yesteryear photographs has only grown stronger.
I adore seeing any antique or vintage picture I chance upon, however from time-to-time in my old school photo seeking endeavours I chance upon an image that was taken here in Canada. On even rarer occasions I find a multitude of vintage Canadian photos, and such was the case this week when I discovered a two minute long Youtube video (called Vintage Toronto Photos) that is positively teaming with a delightful vintage pictures that were taken (roughly) 60 to 120 years ago of women from Toronto (which just happens to be where this vintage blogger hangs her hat each night).
Compiled into an engaging slide show video clip, this excellent selection of image features real world women doing everything from playing sports to attending a graduation ceremony, looking terrifically stylish to working hard to keep the (WW1) home fires burning.
Hands down, this video is my favourite online vintage find of 2011 so far, and the kind of deeply special treasure that reminds me why I started Chronically Vintage in the first place - to celebrate the lives, times and world of those women (and men) who called the early and mid-20th century their own.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie today voiced deep concern for the tens of thousands of civilians caught up in two separate and fast-unfolding emergencies: C�te d’Ivoire and Libya.
“As we witness these newest crises unfold in west and north Africa, it is critical that all parties respect the fundamental right of people in danger to flee to safety ? whether civilians caught in conflict in their own country or refugees and asylum seekers caught in new conflicts,” Jolie said. “All I’m asking is that civilians be protected, and not targeted or harmed.”
In C�te d’Ivoire, fierce fighting in the Abobo district of Abidjan and clashes in the west over the past few days have blocked access for humanitarian organizations and brought the country perilously close to all-out civil war. Thousands of people have been displaced in Abidjan, C�te d’Ivoire’s commercial hub, and refugees have been streaming across the country’s western border into Liberia in unprecedented numbers. Eastern Liberia is already dealing with more than 70,000 Ivorians who have arrived there since the presidential election of late November.
At the same time, UNHCR is worried for thousands of refugees, asylum-seekers, and irregular migrants still inside Libya and in circumstances of considerable danger. Few of these have been able to make it out of Libya and into either Tunisia or Egypt ? where most people leaving the country have been heading. On Tuesday, UNHCR said it was particularly concerned for sub-Saharan Africans who have become vulnerable because of suspicions that they are foreign mercenaries. Amid chaotic scenes at the Tunisian border, UNHCR also issued a joint appeal with the International Organization for Migration for a massive humanitarian evacuation for people fleeing Libya into Tunisia.
“With these new waves of uprising and conflict, there is and will continue to be massive new displacement. The world needs to address this moment. We have to give people safe passage, evacuation if needed, and ensure they have asylum. We don’t want to look back and find their deaths are on our hands,” Jolie said.
The acclaimed actress was speaking from Kabul, Afghanistan, where she has been on a low-profile two-day visit to listen to the problems of returned refugees still struggling to survive and reintegrate almost 10 years after returning from exile.
“As the world’s attention shifts to the newest refugee crises, we need to remember that if we don’t support people in the long term to really get back on their feet ? to feed, shelter and educate their families, to earn a living with dignity, and to participate in meaningful ways in their societies ? we will see a continued cycle of instability and new crises,” Jolie said.
UNHCR is rallying support from donors and other humanitarian and development agencies to redouble their efforts to help returning refugees reintegrate in Afghanistan.

With just one more merry day to go until St. Valentine's Day whistles into town, cupid in tow, I thought it would fun to share a delightful vintage page from 1935 featuring an array of great party ideas that can easily be put into play at the last moment (aka, for a planned or impromptu party tomorrow).
Beautifully illustrated, this elegant page (which comes via Millie Mott's Flickr stream) features ideas for everything from Valentine's Day table decorations to party games, invitations to a festive menu (of minced ham sandwiches cut into heart shapes, raw carrot strips, party ice cream with peppermint stick sauce, heart cookies and fruit punch - yum-yum! I'd be happy to serve that easy, enjoyable sounding spread) and is the sort of wonderful glimpse into the past that instantly makes me smile.
Whatever you have planned for tomorrow, my dears, I hope that you have a marvelous day that's worthy of a great vintage inspired party! :)

Natalie Portman, the now Oscar-winning actress who's the face of Miss Dior Cherie, released a statement Monday night condemning Dior designer John Galliano for his (alleged) anti-Semitic tirade toward a couple in Paris -- this, after a video popped up this weekend showing Galliano making said tirade. Portman's statement says:
"I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano's comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful."
Dior suspended Galliano until the matter has been properly investigated, although rumor has it the house has been looking for a reason to axe the designer for some time. And now he's given it to them. With videotape.
